Collapsible lanterns that stand about 7.5 inches tall when pulled open and fold down to about 5 inches, roughly the size of a phone. Pull the lantern up and the 6+1 LED array spreads light in every direction; leave it part way up for something softer. Collapse it and the same unit works as a flashlight, so one light covers the tent, the walk to it and the inside of the car.
A built-in 1600 mAh battery charges two ways, by solar panel or by USB, with automatic power-off protection. A full charge gives more than 25 hours of light. The ABS housing is water resistant, heat resistant and freeze resistant, and the folding handle hangs the lantern from a tent loop, a branch or a hook, which frees up your hands. Water resistant is not waterproof, so keep it out of heavy rain and never submerge it.
Keep one in the car and one in the house and between them they cover camping, hiking, fishing, late dog walks, power cuts and storms. They are light enough for a child to carry on a camping trip and simple enough that there is nothing to explain. Solar charging depends on strong sunlight, so charge by USB when you need a full battery quickly.
